Get Android 2.3.5 in your GP Crystal!

The official android 2.2.2 of GP Crystal is buggy, laggy and hungry storage eater!

Want to try some super fast custom ROMs! I got one for you!

Below I described the process of how to unroot your Gp Crystal phone and install a custom ROM in it.

By doing this you void your contract with GrameenPhone! And in the process of installing this ROM if you brick your phone I take no responsibility!

Procedure to update Gingerbread 2.3.5 on GP Crystal

  1. Before we proceed to the procedure, you will have to first ensure that you put the ROM (link given below) you are going to install in to the root of your phone’s memory card which you can do by simply transferring file from the computer to the phone via USB cable.
  2. Now, next up you will have to root the GP Crystal Phone with the help of the SuperOneClick (link given below). First, you need to download SuperOneClick application and need to enable USB debugging in your phone by pressing Menu, then you need to tap on Settings, then Applications, Development and need to check on option USB debugging.
  3. Now, after changing to USB Debugging, connect your phone with your computer using USB cable and launch the SuperOneClick from your computer and just tap on Root button.
  4. As soon as you tap on Root, the device will be rooted. If rooting was a success, then you’ll see a new Superuser app in your app drawer/tray and if the rooting is not successful all you will have to do is to just repeat the above procedure. You again have to restart the device so that the device is completely rooted. Once the device is restarted, your phone has been successfully rooted.
  5. Now, once the device has been rooted you now will have to proceed and need to downloadthe ROM Manager application from an all new Android Market Place
  6. Now, once the ROM Manager is installed successfully in your phone, you now need to open the ROM Manager and need to install the CWM Recovery which can be done by just tapping on the option of “Flash Clock Work Mod Recovery”. After this selection, you will be prompted to select the phone model wherein you need to find and tap on the “Huawei Ascend” phone (You won’t find the model Huawei u8500) after which the CWM will be installed in your phone.
  7. Now select “Reboot in CWM” in ROM manager and the phone will reboot in CWM 3.0.0.5.
  8. Use your volume buttons to scroll through the menu and the trackball to select options from menu. Select “Backup and restore” then “Backup” to create a backup of your current ROM.
  9. After backing up is complete, go back to the main menu using back key, select “Wipe data/Factory reset”.
  10. Then select “Install zip from SD” and “Select zip” and select the ROM you are going to install.
  11. CWM will then start flashing your ROM so sit back and let it complete. After it finishes flashing, wipe data again for greater stability and then reboot the phone

That’s it! You now have a custom ROM, sporting android 2.3.5 made by slax!

PS. I found this backup of a guy, which one is nicely patched and works perfect. So use this for greater stability!

  • Download this! : http://www.multiupload.com/0OUC09M849
  • Find a folder named ClockWorkMod in your SD card. In it you will find a folder named backup.
  • Unzip the downloaded file into this dir!
  • Follow the steps mentioned above from 1 to 9.
  • Click on BDS-20111012-1123 then restore
  • Now restore your device and you will find yourself running a nice clean sp10 p3!

How to get back to the official GP ROM will be posted tomorrow!

With the green robot it is!

image

Remember, a post I had made almost a year ago, titled ”Blogging on the run”?
Well, last time it was made with an iPod TOUCH 3G. And with change of tastes, priorities and also bank balance, I landed myself in the android land, with a shiny Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini Pro!
I am currently using Flame.E v0.3, and added Go Launcher to my taste! Now I am loving every bit of it!

It’s very easy to install apps in android. All I have to do is just go to android market website from my pc, log in using my google a/c and pick apps I like and click install! And if my mobile is connected to the net (I have wifi network at home) it will automatically download and install it!

With the wordpress app now installed in my phone, I thin I will be posting a lot from now on! And heading towards the wedding season here in Bangladesh, I will post my experience here maybe!

The Android Invasion in Bangladesh’s Rural scenario: A closer look at the GrameenPhone Crystal handset

The telecommunication giant of Bangladesh, GrameenPhone yet again introduces a handset for its customer. In fact, this time an Android based smart phone! Is it good? Is it worth the money? Let’s see!

As people around the globe are getting smarter and faster at work, GP takes the initiative to speed up things here in Bangladesh too. GrameenPhone was the first one to exploit the increasing demand of smart phones and socializing in Bangladesh,. And thus we got – GrameenPhone Crystal, a branded set boasting low price tag (12,160 TK) and Android OS!

When I had first heard of this set before the release I discarded this as another profit making strategy of GP but I was curious too. So once I got the chance to test it out first hand, I leapt onto it.

The things I noticed at first glance-

  • It looks stylish. Black plastic body with a silver lining for the keys.
  • It is very light weight (only 115 gm).
  • It takes almost a minute to boot and total one and half minute for it to become functional (takes an extra minute if a memory card is inserted).
  •  It has good screen resolution (320 x 480 pixels, 3.2 inches).
  • The touch sensitivity is good.
  • The set is slow!
  • The set has preloaded applications and loads of them.

Shiny and glittery on the outside, but what’s inside?

Yes, it looks all shiny and glittery at first glance and also elegant considering its price. Now let’s take a closr look at the hardware specifications and their performances.

It is a set made by Huwei, first released in mid 2010. For the 2G network it has the usual GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and for 3G network HSDPA 900 / 2100 signal strength. Nothing new here. But what interests me here is that it has only 256 MB of RAM with 512 MB of ROM. With a tiny processor like Qualcomm MSM7225, 528 MHz, it totally closes up the gaming experience the android market has to offer its users.

*Depends on network status and usage

The screen is TFT capacitive, although not scratchproof. You will be seeing a lot of finger marks on it once you really start using it. So a screen protector should be a good option.

The sound quality in one word is- crap. The loud speaker has a mid level volume and can’t be heard in loud places. Even with the headphones on, it sounds awful. Not recommended for music lovers.

The camera is good, with 3.15 MP, but only for day light, but not for night time use. It seems to have a fixed shutter speed and aperture value. Apart from that, the photo resolution is average. Some camera apps may do justice to it.

The GPS is not accurate. Even while using satellite and EDGE, it will show you in somewhat 500 meters away from your actual location. I tried it with wifi and different network providers, still no improvement.

The EDGE speed is okay, so is Bluetooth. But the Wifi has a very short range. And while I used it as a hotspot, it kept turning off.

The most frustrating of all is the battery life. I have used it for 4 days now, but I still can’t figure it out! It charges up pretty fast (100% in two hours) but with every features turned on, it lasted for only 1 hour barely! But again, after next recharge, it lasted for 2.5+ hours of continuous wifi and EDGE using, And the talk time is pretty low with the average result of almost 3 hours only.

The Android mania

The hardware specification is not satisfying. You can afford something better at this price tag, but not the android with it though.

The set is equipped with android version 2.1- Éclair. Seeing the Éclair is a disappointment as Google has already released version 2.3.4 Gingerbread, which is much faster and bug free. But éclair still remains the most supported OS. And the set can’t really afford any better OS. It, for what I have seen, cannot be updated too. So, practically, for new android users it may be an excitement but for old folks like me is a common scenario. So, the users may get bored soon with it.

But still, it is an exciting feature for the people who have used only symbian and java phones, and not to forget those Chinese sets that have flooded the market. If you wanted to introduce Android to a nation and spread it among the rural, what better option do you have?

The handset has all the basic apps preloaded. Google mail, Google Search, Google Talk, Google Maps, Google Calendar, YouTube, Android Market, Facebook, twitroyd and Opera Mini browser is already loaded. Though the facebook and opera mini app are back dated and starts to update immediately after you enter the android market. Glitchy.

The user can create or sync google accounts and load their mobile with more apps. But I would recommend a task manager to keep the phone from slowing down by deleting unnecessary apps running on the background.

People may need time to get used to this android- especially the new users but once they get the hang of it, they will love the Android. And will also wish for updates and a bit better hardware performance.

In one word- Bangladesh will succumb into android mania soon!

While using the handset….

While using the set, you will face these annoying situations-

  • The onboard QWERTY keypad is not smooth at all. Even when it is taken horizontally.
  • The proximity sensor is slow to response.
  • The 4 functional buttons, apart from the square black home button, are always illuminated, but can you will be able to notice this only when its pitch black. When the set is still new to you, you may have to get it close to your nose to read the writings on the buttons to know its functions.
  • The internet and MMS settings for GrameenPhone are preloaded, but while using other providers, you have to enter the settings manually.
  • While using a memory card, it takes some time to access it.
  • You may not hear the ringtone in crowded places and miss some calls.

To buy it or not to buy it?

It was pretty hard to write off this set as a pure industrial-profit-making-rejected-crap, cause for some strange reason you will feel attached to it. I have used iTouches, use Sony Ericsson Xperia x10, but still would love to have one. Why?

  • Stylish look with nice finishing.
  • The feeling of using an Android based cheap smart phone which you can throw around and use without much care.
  • The 24 months extended warranty period for GP users.
  • Big screen with nice graphics capabilities.

And my reasons to keep you from buying one-

  • Remember GP’s last branded set? It was very promising but later got trampled by handsets from Micromax. And Micromax is also about to bring their own Android equipped sets. They were better last time, why not this time?
  • The main purpose of using this set is to utilize the apps, which, unfortunate for us, needs internet. And as none of the providers have good EDGE speed or network coverage together, the choice of using GP’s EDGE is some nightmare too. The slow net will totally spoil the party.
  • Why Huwei? Samsung is a much better option!

If I was to rate the features

Graphics – 4.5/5

The graphics really got me. You will know it once you see it!

User friendliness- 3.5/5

The function keys are a disaster and also the onscreen keyboard. You may have too press too hard at times to make it function.

Battery life- 3.5/5

I really don’t know what to say about this. It may last 1~2 hours while using all the features and talk time is 3 hours maximum.

EDGE- 4.5/5

I was satisfied with the EDGE performance.

Wifi- 3.5/5

The range of wifi and its response is pretty low compared to other sets available at this price.

Performance- 4/5

If you know to how to handle it, you will surely have the best performance sipped out of its tiny processor.

 Entertainment- 4/5

The apps alone are enough to keep one engaged with this. The exclusion of games is very disappointing.

 Overall 4/5

The bottom line

Why did GP introduce such a set in Bangladesh with no 3G infrastructure or even good EDGE speed? Beats me. But if you think in track of getting people familiar with the Android apps and the limitless possibilities it holds, you will be convinced that GrameenPhone took a great initiative. The students and rural people are the main target of this handset and I don’t see why they won’t leap onto it. Many have heard about android but couldn’t afford one due to the huge prices tagged with them. Even though it is a set with outdated OS and mid range hardware, you may soon see that the one who delivers you newspaper giving you updates of news, or the shopkeeper asking for your facebook/twitter address to let you know of latest bargains!

Revolution begins with a small step!

The death kiss

She was there, standing a feet away from me, just enough to be out of my grasping hand. She was mad. VERY mad at me. And she was yelling at me. For some reason I couldn’t make out what she was yelling at me. Her voice strangely seemed coming from the another side of a tunnel. I frowned in concentration. But still couldn’t manage to make a single word out of it. Maybe it was the noise around us, the ever buzzing street, which was making it impossible to understand her words.
I wondered why she was yelling at me. I couldn’t remember. I tried to remember and like always concentrated on her long black hairs. Her hairs always seemed to fascinate me. Maybe it was because it’s she. No, not maybe. Must be her. I could stare at her hairs and get lost in aimless thoughts. This had been ever since I had first met her. That day jumped in front of my eyes. There she was. In her sun shades and her long, to her wild, hair slashing the air as I stood rooted to my place watching her in awe.
I felt something on my cheeks. Some also splattered onto my lips. This time I knew what it was from the taste of it. I had tasted it the second time we had met. We were in my room and she was on my lap. We were fiercely kissing each other. Then, among the burning sensation that was running from my lips to through my body, I tasted this. Or her. I looked up. Was she spitting on me? She seemed to have noticed that I was staring at her hair rather then hear out what she was yelling at me. She always went berserk if she caught me doing something else- like staring at her hair, while she was talking. She felt that she wasn’t being given the importance. I had tried to reason with her, telling her that I did listen to her but was just staring at something else. This seemed to irritate her more.
I tried to apologize to her. But I found it hard to move my lips apart. Weird feeling. Something was wrong. But I was missing it. I looked up at her again. She was trying to burn me with her gaze! Gosh. I should concentrate.
But with everything going on wrong there seemed a little chance of me understanding what she was yelling at me. I still hadn’t figured out why she was yelling at me. Maybe it was because everything was going wrong? I remember the last time we had met. It was like this. I couldn’t find any transport for her as my car was on repairing and her was with her mother. That day was vaguely same. I couldn’t remember what was going on and what I should do. But plus side was that she wasn’t yelling at me. She was rather worried about me.
Then it dawned to me. She was screaming at me because she had seen some weird red marks on my t-shirt. I could not her what it was as I didn’t know either. She was telling me that it was the mark of a girl’s lip gloss. I thought it as a joke and had told her that I had dated another girl. So she was screaming because I joked with her? A smirk crossed across my face.
I heard an angry hiss and hastily tried to put my gaze back on her as I was staring at my feet. The smirk might have, rather already had crossed her temperament level. Man, this is going to be embarrassing. Everyone in the street will be staring at us. I tried to reach for her hand and go to some place less crowded. I didn’t want anyone else to see her mad face. I won’t be able to stand other seeing her dark sides. I hastened. I got hold of her hand and tried to steer her through the road to the other side. I was holding on too hard I thought. So I loosened my grip. And felt a push.
I was thrown off balance by her. Maybe she was feeling contaminated because of my touch and had wanted to break free. Or maybe she loathed me so much that she had pushed me to meet my destiny. I hadn’t realized it right then. But right on that moment, when I heard a screeching noise of brake fail and a thud resulting dorm the collision of my body with a car. I felt the burning sensation that I had felt while kissing her. I wondered why. I realized split second later that death had kissed me. Like always, a bit late to understand.

Copyright is for losers!

By Rupert Grey

On the way over here I read the obituary of Francoise Demulder. Some of you will remember that she was the first woman to win the World Press Photo of the year Award in 1977. The photograph was topical enough – Palestinians in Beirut. She was one of the stars of the Paris – based agencies which made France the centre of world photo-journalism during the last years of the golden age of European and US photographic magazines. Like many photographers here in the sub- continent/Bangladesh she felt “compelled to document how it always was the innocent who suffered while the powerful get richer and richer”. Like a lot of photographers here she was an artist, and she bore witness to the times during which she lived.

I am glad to be back here – this is my third Chobi Mela – and most particularly to see such a rich diversity and high standard of photography over the last few days and – importantly for me – many powerful documentary images which reflect the same passion for justice which drove Demulder, to be a part of the struggle for change in lives of the oppressed.

1. The Title

The title of my talk tonight is Shahidul’s fault. He sent me an email a couple of weeks ago and asked me to give this talk tonight and said could he have the title by return. Just about to go to print, he said. I thought for a few seconds and recalled a phrase which appeared on the introductory page to one of Banksy’s books which I brought as a present for someone before Christmas: copyright is for losers. Catchy enough, but it raises a question which is central to the profession of photography. Banksy is a well known artist in London. So well known that nobody quite knows who he is: his art takes the form of graffiti in public spaces, and I should imagine that he has a very healthy disrespect for the establishment; so it was surprising, and yet not surprising, to see at the foot of the same page that Banksy invoked the protection of the law of copyright for his book.

2. The Central Issue

Banksy’s schizophrenic approach to copyright symbolises the conflict, the tension, between the desire for artists to find their way into the minds of all people, and the need for those artists (and their agents) to maintain a monopoly in order to earn a living. This question, how society produces and distributes its information, literature and art, goes to the very core of freedom. It is an international issue – who gets to say what, to whom? Who has access to it, who gets paid? The answers determine political outcomes. They determine wealth. They determine the extent to which an individual is able to play a central role in altering his or her own life. All this is governed by the law of intellectual property.

3. History of Copyright

Hogarth, the great cartoonist whose images of 17th century life in England are central to our understanding of his era, refused to permit his works to be publicly exhibited until Parliament passed an act prohibiting copying. Which is why the first Copyright Act in UK legislation is called Hogarth’s Act. The first in history, I think. The protection was narrow and the duration short. Since then there has been a great deal of legislation in which the overall trend (to put it mildly) has been to increase protection, reduce the exceptions and extend the duration. Before the 1911 Act in Britain – on which copyright law in Bangladesh is based – the protection was between 7 and 14 years. In 1911 it was increased to 50 years from creation of the work. In 1956 it was increased further to 50 years from 1st publication. Towards the end of the last century it was 70 plus life of the author. Policy makers and their advisors regarded the ownership of intellectual property as they did motor cars: you owned it exclusively, and when you lent it to somebody else – or granted a licence if it is was copyright – it was on strict terms. The thinking was that the more it was protected the more artist & writers would produce their works.

The US patent system was overhauled in the early 1980’s – protection was strengthened – the reach and scope of exclusivity was broadened; and the same thing happened to copyright and trade marks. Universities registered patents and required the payment of royalties: thus institutions dedicated to disseminating knowledge, information and understanding in the widest possible way were in fact impeding the sharing of that knowledge as if they were a commercial enterprise. The proprietary model for disseminating information was, and is, in the ascendant.

4. Internet

At the same time, reflecting perhaps the same concerns, a counter-trend has developed. As the law tightens the control given to the rights-owners and cultural producers, the consumer pushes in the opposite direction: in the networked information economy the ethic of sharing exchanging, building on the past, is the primary driver. Social networks share – with abandon and some would say a blithe disregard for their own privacy – information, knowledge and culture – so that the political and legal pressures which favour the proprietary business model runs head-on into a generation of savvy and determined consumers. There is an increasing resistance to attempts to enclose the information environment. International boundaries, indeed boundaries of all kinds, are becoming blurred, cultural values fused, sovereignty pooled authority subverted. Creative commons, the non profit organisation dedicated to granting royalty-free licenses, expands the range of creative work available to others to build on and share. There is, in short a strong movement which aims to counter the restrictions of the permission culture erected by the dominant producers of culture and the legal systems they (largely) control.

5. “One up on the Greeks”

I have selected, somewhat randomly, three cases to illustrate these conflicting trends: Perfect 10, the soft porn empire in the US, sued Google for enabling users to access Perfect 10’s thumbnail images of Perfect 10’s nude models. Google’s defence, that it was an exception to the usual rule (fair dealing, in lawyers’ jargon), failed in the lower court and won in the higher court. A significant victory for the consumer.

Last year a New Zealander called Elliot Smith uploaded a hundred videos from YouTube. No problem there, though I dare say there was an infringement or 2, but then he made the mistake of uploading Olympics footage without permission. Within 12 hours his entire account was completely deleted. The owners of the Olympic footage were savvy enough, or rich enough, to have at their disposal the necessary technology to force YouTube (now Google of course) to cut off anyone who is accused of infringing copyright. Whether or not they turn out to be guilty is no longer of interest. This is pretty outrageous. The judgment has been widely criticised as “deeply flawed”. Victory by technology, aka bullying, rather than law.

Google also feature in the third case I want to mention. It is by far the biggest and most significant. It settled just before Christmas. Four years ago Google started scanning millions of books onto the web. It asked permission of neither the publishers nor the authors, and pretty soon it got sued by both. Google’s aim was along the same lines as the chief librarian in the great library of Alexandria, burned to the ground by Caesar three centuries before Christ in one of the most destructive acts of vandalism in world history: Google wants to set up a library containing every single book, article, play or art work written or created in the history of the world. The Great Library in Alexandria housed, it is thought, between 40 and 70% of everything that had been written by that stage in world history. Google, not to be outdone by the Greeks is aiming for 100%. Furthermore, it maintains, access to its library is simple and free, neither of which was the case in Alexandria’s case.

As their archivist some what arrogantly remarked “this is our chance to get one-up on the Greeks… It will be an achievement remembered throughout time – in short, the entire works of human kind, from the beginning of recorded history, in all languages, available to all people, all the time”. Worth mentioning in this context, I suppose, is that all this information, that is to say all the information that is can currently be housed in a building about the size of a small town library. No doubt tomorrow it will all fit into your Ipod.

Battle over copyright infringement commenced in the States but the ramifications are worldwide. Eventually Google caved in, and paid out 125 million to the Association of American Publishers and the Authors Guild. Part of the damages – US$34.5 million – will be spent by Google in creating a “book rights registry”, to make sure that authors are compensated for the use of their works. It will be independent of Google, and will oversee payments to authors much as the equivalent of the music industry oversee payments to songwriters and musicians. Google also agreed to pay $60 for every book uploaded onto the web, and to charge a licence fee of which 68% will go to the authors. For reasons that are wholly unclear, photographs were not included in this agreement, and thus no doubt will be excluded from access on the web.

6. Searches

The new technology of searching renders archaic the concept of copyright; when is the process of copying an infringement, as opposed to just making it available? Enabling a connection? Is it the same as creating a copy, in the ordinary sense? There is a value in the connection created by the search, and the value of the work is increased the more it is shared. To put it another way, as no doubt Google did, the value of the created work is increased enormously by allowing a billion new connections. That in the previous generation would have been completely inconceivable. It is publishing on a scale which is incomprehensible. Is that good for the creator? Is it, in effect, free advertising which will enhance a reputation, or a massively outrageous infringement of copyright for which compensation should be justly awarded?

7. Review of Copyright Law

Against this background, it is not surprising that the law of copyright is being reviewed by Western Governments and the UK in particular. David Lammy, the Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property, launched the review earlier this year, pointing out that 8.3% of the UK GDP – at least as it was (down a bit since then I expect) – and is growing at twice the rate of the economy as a whole. It follows the Gower review a couple of years ago, amongst whose recommendations were to reform the copyright provisions in relation to orphan works – that is to say works to which owners cannot be identified after reasonable enquiries have been made by the prospective publisher – and secondly, a recommendation that a further copyright exception should be created for user generated content, on the basis that it is “transformative” – technical jargon for which I have so far read or heard about 6 definitions.

Implicit in these proposals is an acknowledgment that the high level of copyright protection considered to be crucial for intellectual creation and development should to an extent be tempered. The European Commission’s recent green paper on copyright and the knowledge economy points out that the balance between ensuring a reward for creation and investment and the future dissemination of knowledge has been challenged, or rendered less effective, by the evolving internet technology. Difficult to argue with that.

A great deal of debate has been generated by these prospective changes, particularly the proposed orphan works exception; and the transformative use exception has been described as artistic stealing. These are significant steps within the framework of our existing copyright law.

8. The Answer?

I have no idea. But I have three thoughts for photographers:

It is now critically important to ensure that your name is tagged to every one of your images on the web. Your paternity right is now more valuable than your copyright. It is the key to the management of your reputation as a photographer, and it is that reputation which will generate your income; by the same token, and equally important, tagging your name will prevent it becoming an orphan work.

Secondly technology. Not my field, to say the least of it, but programmes (on subscription) are now available to trace your image wherever it appears or is accessed on the web. They use advanced identification and algorithms to identify your images by the composition of its pixels, so its appearance on the internet sends an instant notification to the owner of the copyright. In theory you can then ask for a fee, but the real point is that it works the other way round: publishers can use it to identify copyright holders, and will need to if they are to take advantage of the orphan works legislation.

Thirdly new business models are arriving on the scene. On-line agencies aren’t just stock agencies; some of them commission work and actively engage with publishers. As the number of bricks & mortar agencies (and publishers) dwindle, undercut by fast-moving & shrewd on-line players with minimal overheads, the market-place is changing. In change there is opportunity. And more the point, it does not matter whether you are here in Dalhmundi Bangladesh or in London’s Covent Garden. The only thing that matters is the quality of your image and the content – and accuracy – of your text.

According to the British Journal of Photography in London there are now 3 trillion images on the web. That was last August. So there’s a bit of competition. But judging by the quality of some of the work I have seen in the last couple of days I can see no reason, particularly if you subscribe to a tracking device, why you should not be able to make a living out of photography.

“I have been practically staring at this ” Add a testimonial for NiH ” page for about fifteen minutes .

No , it is not because I can’t gather what I should write here , rather I was trying to figure out what I am about to miss while writing about him !

Anyways ,I’ll give it a try , I suppose . Me and my failed write-ups with pathetic writing skills ( sigh ) .

Naser Imran Hossain Bhai , aka Atunu Bhai , aka NiH bhai , is someone who you can honestly call a cool and collected dude .
He is amazing with his choice of words and also capable of making people like me , to Google out the meaning of words used by him ! This doesn’t make him a complex and hard-to-get narrator in a surprising way .Because the way he writes , and when someone reads it , that doesn’t seem hard to digest at all ! He can inject the feelings he wants to express into his reader , and that too , I believe , without even trying to !

Hail you , Ostaad ( Though you haven’t yet officially accepted me as your Shissho ! :-( )

I think , you people ( including NiH bhai ) have already understood that I have got few nuts on the loose ! I am in flickr , supposed to write something about his photographing skill and here I am blabbing about something else !
That also defines how great he is though . . .

His photographing skill , eh?
I don’t think I am qualified to talk about HIS level of photographing skill .
Rather , it will be wise of me to tell you how I got into this world of clicking and sighing and clicking and smiling!
My nature never allows me too stick to one thing for too long . I was always found doing something – like collecting stamps / CDs / DVDs / Cards / stones……… leaving my studies and as results , getting grounded . Yep , a stupid kid I was . -_-

I had heard his name before my beloved math teacher , Sanat Kumar Pandit Sir , who was always ( to my utter dislike at that period ) raving about his all time favorite and talented student , Atunu bhai . I used to think ” Man ! Such a nerd ! “
Then , Facebook came like a talk-of-the-town trend , and I had signed up and was searching for people from my vicinity . And found NiH bhai . Thinking , ” having a nerd or two in my friendlist won’t hurt me !”

I peeked into his profile , clicked on that photos link and was blown away !
For the first time , I had realized that photographing is also an art and something too cool ! The photos were colorful , BnW , loaded with long write-ups which at first , I didn’t care to read , awesome compositions , tricks , ideas and what not ! ” I gotta try this out ” , was the first line which came out from my mouth after watching his photo albums .
I grasped for the camera which I never really had tried to utilize before . Peeked through the viewfinder and started clicking .

And I still continue .
I bug him to check out my profile , bomber him with questions and put heavy loads on him with my reckless requests .

All this , without even meeting him in the real life for a long time .

So , what more can I say ?
He inspired a brat like me without knowing it . So much power he possesses in his photographs !

And his personality , those who are close to him say , a down-to-earth person with so much grief inside him . But he still keeps smiling and makes others smile .

I think I can’t type anymore . ’cause if I continue , you ( including NiH bhai ) will sue me thinking I am Teelafying him , :-S

All hail NiH bhai !

Amen

P.S. I DID NOT teelafy him !”

Blogging on the run

With the world moving on so fast, if you can not keep up with it you are done for good. With an iPod as a tablet pc, I am able to blog from anywhere with a wifi connection! But hardly, you will find hot spots in Dhaka, let alone Mymensingh!

EID Masti Cricket match – TNT vs Bluster Boyz

On the second day of Eid, BAU’s center of attraction, after a long break since the last Eid, was again the ABC playground, where legendary The New Tornadoz (TNT) Boyz were head to head with the present generation, Bluster Boyz. The clash of the giants (okay, I exaggerated a bit!) first took place on the last Eid and becoming a source of great enjoyment by uniting all the old day’s superstars!

This was a follow up match to the last year’s 2-0 triumphant by the TNTz. The Bluster Boyz, desperate for revenge and showing it through their attitude and on the t-shirt’s back too, were ready to mark their spot and end of the TNT era. Humiliating, it was for them, the last two matches, where in the first one, they lost to a last-ball-six nail biting end and were blasted away in next match by Binoy bhai’s aggressive batting.

The pre-match mud throwing had already started in Facebook and thus, a great amount of tension, emotion and hype were building surrounding this match. Though the seniors-juniors maintain a healthy relationship, when it came to this match, no one was willing to give an inch of comfort to other.

The match’s fate was dangling till 12 pm because of the gloomy weather. But the eagerness of the most seniors and honorable guest players for TNT- Abul Bashar MD. Sharif, Scion Anjir, Arefin Samad khan and Maruf Abid made sure, the match commenced.

In the course of time, the ABC playground has changed a lot and it was a bit surprising for the seniors as they saw a cemented practice pitch in the rain drenched, muddy ABC field. Thanks to this, the match was being played.

Yours truly arrived a bit late, so he doesn’t know who won the toss as the TNTz were put on to bat first. The Bluster Boyz were planning on to blast away the TNT boyz using the over cast condition and their pace fire. But, the equally competitive openers of TNT, Nayan bhai and Maruf bhai, made sure that the TNT’s get a reasonable start. They fended the ball with their arms, legs and even dove in the muddy field trying to avoid being run out.

Couple of boundaries and two huge sixes from Nayan bhai, reminding of his old days, kept TNT on track, but catastrophe struck TNT on 6th over, as Mahmudul Haque Saunak bowled an excellent over taking three wickets – Maruf bhai was caught at deep, Olin bhai and Anjir bhai went for a first ball duck, not giving away a single run. Soon Nayan bhai departed being bowled. But not before they had made out the most of their opportunities. The old bones showed that they were still capable of reliving their memorable golden days!

In came Baten MD. Shabbir and Tauhid hossain, two hard hitting batsmen and original TNT members. They hung around for some overs and adter few moments, Tauhid bhai was removed being bowled by Navid Arefin Khan’s superb fast bowling and Shabbir bhai was unlucky as Junaid Anjum took a superb flying catch in the deep. Mutmain Musharraf bhai came and went too as the TNT found themselves in ruins.

Tanmoy Mahathir and Ahmed Jabeer, the hero of the last match and captain of TNT respectively, took control of the game. They played cautiously and with timely hit boundaries kept the scoreboard ticking. But, the Bluster Boyz struck back again at the end, by removing Sajib bhai and Anam MD. Noor bhai (again, a first ball duck!) and made sure that they did not go for too many runs in the last overs. They bowled the last two overs superbly conceding just 4 runs.

So, the Bluster Boyz were given a target of 87 runs off 90 balls to show their wrath.

In the mean time, the sun had already come out and the over cast condition, which gave advantage to the Bluster Boyz, wasn’t there anymore.

Junaid and Fahian Nobel started off cautiously as TNT made sure that no easy runs were given away. Anam bhai and Sajib bhai, the opening bowlers scrambled them for 13 runs of 4 overs and sementing their reputation as the most skilled bowlers of TNT again. Later, Maruf bhai came and showed his old self with the red cherry, bowling fast and accurate and removed Nobel by bowling him out.

Tauhid bhai’s younger brother, Tahmid Hossain, as stylish and aggressive as his elder brother, came and took the attack on the TNT bowlers. The absence from the field was showing on some bowlers of TNT as they strived for line and length. Tahmid and Junaid took the full advantage of it and hit some amazing and huge sixes.

But the TNT boyz weren’t ready to hand over their reign so easily. Shabbir bhai struck back with vital blows, surgically removing Tahmid and later bowling out Nafis Rezwan Mostafa (aka Zaky). Junaid was found short in his crease and the game was on as Bluster Boyz needed 9 off 15 balls.

But Sounak, hero with the ball earlier, decide it was his time to play the hero’s role and his shot for a four extinguished whatever hope the TNTz had left. The game entered the final over with Bluster Boyz needing 2 runs two taste the glory of the conquerors. And they did not take time as Sounak struck a single after a wide ball to take them home.

They celebrated, like the TNTz did last year, with a 2 liter Pepsi, showering each and every member with it. It was, after all, a toiled win for which they had been waiting for almost a year.

Prizes were given and more celebration took place, as the game ended on a high note. The match was never short in competitive mode or excitement. Emotion was flying high and time had decided to go back, as BAU saw its once thumping players stride all over the fields and screaming on top of their voices trying to cheer everyone, bridging the seniors and juniors through a cricket match. It is just the beginning of a saga, that won’t end.

Crematic-X : Ronangoner Daakticket Review

Marking their debut with “Doitota” in ROCK 202 album and later adding another notch of fans’ craze with radio release of “Ronangoner Daakticket “, Crematic – X was all set to cement their place in BD music industry with their debut album. Not making their fans to wait much, within a year of their first release, they blew us away with their largely anticipated debut album, “Ronangoner Daakticket”, under G-series’ banner.
The five young “ALL-BUETian” musicians, Ashique, Mishu, Prajna, Rifat and Sanjoy, indeed found themselves in a war against music piracy, and of which, I personally am absolutely sure, that they will be able to gain upper hand with the 11 songs they have produced.
Their songs bear marks of the journey they had started 4 years ago. Though it is considered as a short time, the band sounded as compact and professional as any other well established bands of Bangladesh.
The album engineered with 10 brand new tracks and one bonus track (Doitota) is an artistic exhibition of a band covering two genres- thrash metal and rock. Crematic- X not only made them their own genre, but also surpassed all other bands, who failed before trying to cover the dual style.
The album kicks off on a high note, with Mishu on vocals for “Chayamegher ontoraale”. This proved to be crucial. First impression is very vital, and with catchy guitar solo and soothing vocals from Mishu had done it! The part “Narannaaaナ.” will definitely make you sing along with it. Anyone is bound to get curious after this and go for the next tracks for more.
But yours truly got regularly blown away in amazement as he proceeded on with the album. The next track, “Nikosh Adhaar”, with soft intro and a nice vocal approach by Ashique, will catch listeners off guard as two amazing guitarist- Prajna and Rifat launched into an aggressive play of guitar play powered with Ashique’s chill-down-the-spine thrashing vocals. The song contains variations, showing the potential of the band members. The up and downs in the tunes were nicely arranged and a forget-me-not scream from the vocal, will make your blood rush. They manage to make you feel the cruelty they felt while making this song.
Up next was Prajna, with “Brishti”, a melodious track with again, an amazing intro. Prajna’s voice will surely make you take a dive into your past, and long for it. Ashique was amazing with the words as much as the keys.
“Orthohin Stobdhota”, one of my favorites, is a screamy display of Ashique’s capability as a prolific thrash metal vocal. Nice key tones mixed with gruesome guitar and bass, and a terrific drumming took the song to another level. From start to end, which is a different one, it is simply perfect.
Next track, “Firi na” is another piece leaning heavily on lyrics and Prajna made the best out of it. A soft tone with an amazing guitar solos at mid and end. Feeling lonely? Let Prajna take care of you with this!
And undoubtedly, the best track of the album, “Ostitter Ohonkaar”, with a different type of intro and a kill-switch guitar entry to the song will make you shiver in anticipation. Ashique’s vocal capability pierces the sky here! The song changes its course keeping up with the lyrics. A nice lying-low-happily tune totally visualizes the song. And then,  adrenaline pumping guitar backed up with superb bass-drum combination, lead by Ashique take another dive just when you expect them to give it a rest and they return with an ending only perfect for this song. Charismatic stuff from them. Anyone would be proud to call it their own numbers.
Prajna had provided the variety Crematic-X is known for, throughout the album and “Kromosho Amatei” is the best of all his efforts. Swagota’s sweet vocal contribution at the intro was just what one could ask for. And Prajna, if he carries on like this, he can triumph over all those girlish romantic singers of our country. Amazing key tones and great tempo at drumming will confirm its entry to anyone’s all time romantic songs’ playlist.
I was taken aback a bit as I heard Mishu covering “It’s My Life”, paying tribute to Bon Jovi, as I could hear several unexpected noises at 33 and 42 seconds. Even though, excellent work with violin and keys with time to time drums and guitar combination, enabled them to produce their own version of the song. Apart from only two songs, the absence of Mishu as a vocal throughout the album, is somewhat of a disappointment.
“Ghrinar Opokotha” had been in my mobile ever since I had heard the un-mastered version. A speedy guitar solo intro marked with again, and I will never get tired of saying it, amazing screaming vocal performance by Ashique. The chorus part along with a backup voice is just superb. Rifat and Prajna guitar duo powered with bass-drum force was a perfect one. It will leave you craving more drums solo.
At last, came the title track, “Ronangoner Daakticket”, which was radio released before the Independence Day. Khaled Khan’s amazing recitation of a freedom fighter’s letter is known for bringing tears to the audience. Armored with amazing guitars, three vocals- Ashique, Prajna and Mishu flawlessly delivered the patriotic feeling. The amazing addition of “Jonmo amar dhonno holo” guitar solo is bound to make your hairs stand up in excitement. We, the Bangladeshis are too emotional and take pride in being so.
The album overall is an excellent addition for any rock and thrash music lover. The only cons I have found is with the sound of the vocals and drums. It was too low to my taste and increasing them would have given the listener a much thrashing and rocking experience. Everyone will just love Ashique screaming at their ears at top volume. But, which was not to be.Otherwise, I think Crematic-X should be proud of with what they have done. And the listeners are bound to be left striving for more of them.
Happy listening and stop music piracy.

The Charismatic CREMATIC – X ! !

The work I had been babbling about earlier !! Take a look !

They are hot , they make hearts throb and they have their spot in BUET . They are the charismatic CREMATIC – X . Their own number , DOITOTA from ROCK 202 , a mixed album has been a buzz around the underground music followers and also they are the only all BUET-ian band to have their track released in an album ever . Recently , adding another feather – the Moo’s Band Fest 2009 winner , in their crown , they have rightfully captured the media’s attention .

A five member band followed by Ashique Ahmed Kaifee ( Vocals ) from Civil Engineering Dpt. , Arifur Rahman Mishu ( bass and vocals ) from Urban and Regional Planning Dpt. , Moinul Hossain Rifat ( guitars ) fom the Computer Science and Engineering Dpt. , Prajnaprasun Bhattacharjee ( guitars ) and Sanjoy Halder ( drums ) from Mechanical Engineering Dpt. currently stands for CREMATIC – X .

Despite getting the sniff of name and fame , the band seems all too down to earth as they agreed upon meeting on my very first request to meet up at BUET for an interview.

Although it was during the holidays , Prajnaprasun Bhattacharjee ( aka Progga ) and Sanjoy Halder couldn’t make it due to unavoidable circumstances . So it was Mishu , Ashique and Rifat altogether who had an open talk me , at their hall room .

Right after getting settled and trading greetings , I noticed the life size check of Moo’s Band Festival and decided that I should start on things with this .

First of all , congratulations for winning the Moo’s band fest, even though it’s a bit late !

Crematic – X : Thanks ! We appreciate it anyways !

Tell me more about the Moo’s Band Fest . I have read about it already but want to hear it from you guys personally .

Mishu : The Moo’s Band fest started on July 13 at Moo’s Barn, an authentic café . Twelve promising bands – Urban Fiction, Road 31, Framework, Biporit, Heal, Oblique, Old School, Xoroastrain, Crematic–X, Chaotic Symphony, Xuthus and Cops Gone Bad – performed in individual hour-long shows at the cafe. Moo’s Barn hosted two shows a week during July and August. There were two judges, Ziaur Rahman from Shironamhin and Sazzad from Elimination . We had to totally transform for this contest . It wasn’t on a stage , rather a lounge . So we decided to do acoustic numbers more and so I had to do the vocals part a lot . Ashique also tapped the keys for a change and is now ,as it clicked , planning on doing it regularly .
Ashique : Just another variation added into our already variable band line up ! But we don’t mind this and through Moo’s band fest , we came to know that the audience loves it too . the best part is that we came into the focus a lot this time and people were curious about us
Mishu : We also came in touch with some stars of our music scenario , and they weren’t hesitant to share their experiences . The media coverage also did a great job publicizing our released track in ROCK 202 ! Thumbs up to you guys !

What genre of music do you play ? Because I have heard lots of questions regarding this !

Ashique : Oh yes ! This is the most asked question , I suppose ! There is no helping it , but we perform two different genres . One is the experimental / thrash rock and the other one is the lovey dovey melodious one .
Rifat : All of us have different music tastes , that is reason behind this . Me and Sanjoy prefer the 80′s rock , and Mishu likes any melodious songs , Progga is a die hard fan of folklore and Rabindranath’s music . Ashique is the most modern one and only likes thrash metal songs ( which , some of his family members call GADHAR CHITKAAR ! )
Mishu : Some warn us that we are trying to ride to boats at once . But I would like to tell them that ” amra ek noukay 2 majhi nisi ! ” ( We have two boatmen in on board ! ) . If you look at it that way , it isn’t a problem anymore .

Now , fill me up a bit . How did it all start ?

Mishu: It all started in BUET . I had been playing guitars long time before coming to BUET and I met up with Rifat and Ashique here , who were just getting started back then but their playing was much more mature . We didn’t have the idea of forming a band in our head and mainly performed at level completions . I still don’t know how , but we had caught the trained and experienced eyes of Atik bhai and Nobel bhai ( Dreek ) with our guitar playing . They drilled in the idea of forming a band into our head and we are grateful for that ! And thus the three of us started practicing together . Later Mushfique , Progga and Sanjoy joined us as bassist , guitarist and drummer respectivly .
Ashique : At this point , I decided to grab the main vocals’ spot , which back then was a musical chair ( some say that the condition hasn’t changed at all ! ) , which gave our band the first compact out look . Genius , ain’t I !!
Rifat : We still had some problems though . We did not have good gears , weren’t serious about practise and this made Atik bhai angry . But Nobel bhai had his faith in us and kept on ushering us to spend more time in practise . Also , the genre of our music was something that had always kept us on toe . At gigs , Ashique mainly performed the hard rock numbers where Mishu used to do the melodious ones . But Mushfique had different views and thus left the band leaving Mishu to fill up the spot as bassist . And till now , the formation is stable .
Mishu : You see , we were still unsure whether we had the THING to become a rock band . We started as CREMATIC- X by performing at BUET along with Shironaamhin as the main band . We kept on pressing our luck and it was the concert at chittagong , which turned things around for us . It was a band’s dream – come – true performance by us ! We pulled off everything finely and perfectly . Nothing went wrong and the crowd went crazy !
Ashique : We also got Atik bhai on our side with that ,remember ? He gave all of us a big hug and saying that we had proved him wrong , for the very first time ! After that , we never had to look back !

What is the reason behind naming yourselves CREMATIC-X ?

Mishu : Actually there isn’t any special reason behind naming ourselves CREMATIC – X . it was something we had come up on the spur of moment right before getting onto the stage of our first concert at BUET . Progga had asked some of our friends to suggest some names and Crematic was one of them . We just chose it , nothing special !
Ashique : And I am a big fan of STATIC – X . So , i added the X to sound a bit kewl like them !
Rifat : It helped our fans though . They now can call us the CX instead of typing or saying the whole name ! Hail X ! !

Tell us about your journey to the ROCK 202 .

Rifat : One word ‘Facebook’ ! ( laughs )
Ashique : He ( points at Rifat ) virtually lives his life in FB and so he was the first one to notice that Jewel bhai ( Iqbal Asif Jewel ) had asked the bands for demos for his up coming mixed album in his ‘ status update ‘ . And Progga jumped up in excitement . He had been nagging us all few days ago whether we could have at least one of our songs released at Eid and it was like he had his wish come true . So , we submitted three demo songs and among 125 bands we were selected as one of the final 25 bands for the albums !

What is the inspirations behind DOITOTA and why DOITOTA as your first released track instead of all those rocking numbers you have in your store ?

Ashique : A friend of mine has played the role of inspiration behind this . I wrote the lyrics watching him . He is kind of jumpy . One moment he will want to do something and in the very next moment he will just decide upon the very opposite thing ! It may actually seem funny but it pains him a lot !
Mishu : We know that our fans love our hard rock numbers . We also had submitted our ” Ghrinar Opokotha ” , which is popular among the fans , to Jewel bhai along with ‘Doitota’ . But after listening to our demos , Jewel bhai had decided to take ‘Doitota’ for the album . So , we ,all too excited of being selected , went on to record it . But the fans liked it too . Some may have thought otherwise , but we have our faith in Jewel bhai .

What’s the response you got from your friends and families after launching your first number in ROCK 202 ?

Ashique : It was more than what we had expected ! And as it was before Eid , the joy seemed to have become double ! Friends were all too excited and were raving about it t anyone who would listen . They even forced their friends to buy the cd too !
Mishu : Our parents tried to kep a straight face as always . But when I was packing my bags after Eid holidays , they asked me to leave a copy of our album behind !
Rifat : It was my elder brother who had encouraged me to step into the music arena . No one from our family had ever been in a music scenario but he has always supported me . So the track release was like a dream come true for my brother too . And his excitement eventually got flowed into other family members .

How can you people keep managing time between music and BUET ?

Ashique : It’s not that hard when you maintain a routine . It has been easy for me always.
Rifat : Yeah , same for me . From some outsider’s point of view , it may look outragous . But we do get time to time reminders from parents and also jharis from my elder brother . But BUET always allows us to arrange concerts and all . So no problem for us .
Mishu : And the teachers are helpful too ! The Dean of Mechanical department, BUET likes to be in touch with us and he even once had pinned up an article on us published at a daily newspaper , in the notice board ! But we do study to keep our grades formidable . So , before exams , it’s a STOP for all of us .

And do you have your own practice pads ? How many times do you practice within a week ?

Rifat : Yes , we all have our own instruments . But there is never an end of our needs . Especially , it is hard for me to get guitars as I am left handed . But apart from that , we are still chaining our expenses for our dream instruments !
Mishu : And we practice about two or three times a week . Before any concert , the number increases though .
Ashique : We don’t practice often but when we do , we keep pushing ourselves to the limits. We mainly practice getting used to playing both slow and fast numbers as it helps us a lot on stage .

How do you guys come up with a song and the work work put on it to give it the final touch ?

Ashique : Basically , me and Progga do the writing thing . And then all of us sit together, talk about the lyrics , try out different tones . We keep on searching till we find the tone which expresses the emotion we want to deliver and also which satisfies us .
Mishu : Individually we haven’t been into music scenario for a long time so we don’t think our individual music levels are that high . But , when we work together as a band , it goes up several noticeable notches up !

Mention some places where you have performed and the one you liked most .

Mishu : First at BUET . Then at RCC , Chittagong , DU , Stamford and also some places outside Dhaka .
Rifat : And Chittagong , for us , is by far the best of them all till to date . Not only it’s my hometown but the crowds are really passionate !

Which bands you like to cover most during a concert ?

Rifat : I like to play Beatles from the 80′s . We also do covers of Creed , Inflames , Pik floyed , Artcell .
Ashique : I am also trying out Bullet For My Valentine recently . But we like to perform our own numbers .
Mishu : I am okay with the melodious ones . And hard rock doesn’t bother me either .

Hows the response from the fans ? Do you keep in touch with them ?

Mishu : The fans have always been around us . They are good critics and so we take their responses very seriously . We always try to stay in touch with them , keep them updated and the like it . One of us is always there to answer their queries via FB or text messages . They are the one we are singing for and we already have some die had fans and that’s amazing considering that we have only one released track !

What is the future plan of guys ? Both individually and as a band ?

Rifat : Well , if it’s individual future plan then all I have to say is that i have to maintain my grades so that I can get into a job and keep doing music . As a band , of course our very own album and that two within a year and half . We are almost at the end of our terms at BUET and after we have completed our undergraduation , dunoo ! There is a possibility that we wll get scattered all around the globe ! So a full fledged album is definitely round the corners .
Mishu : We are currently making as much as demos possible and then work on them . We don’t want to be hasty with our work as we want to deliver a quality music to our listeners . But yeah , maybe maiden album IS around the corners . And I have some higher studies up in my mind . So maybe . . . . !
Ashique : I want to stick with the music industry , ONLY if it enables me to tie two ends easily . It is really hard to survive as a musician only in Bangladesh , especially where there are so many piracy going on . But still , I haven’t given up my hopes for it . And our own album is a first priority to me too !

Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts with us . It has been such a nice time with you guys . Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you out this far ?

CX : First of all , all of our parents ! We know that they try their hardest not to show their enthusiasm on the progress we are making and this helps us to keep our feet on the ground . Our teachers and friend from BUET have always been our well wishers . And our dedicated fans , who spend some of their so precious times to keep on tab with us and keep us on alert with their queries . It’s for you people hat we have made it this far and also continue looking forward . Keep listening to good music and stop piracy ! And thank you too ! Keep it up , dude !
